No Prep Veneers vs Regular Veneers: How to Choose, From a Seoul Dentist

No prep veneers vs regular veneers is usually the first real decision people face once they decide to improve their smile.
Both are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of your teeth. The difference is what happens to your own tooth before the shell goes on.
In this guide, I will walk you through enamel removal, appearance, longevity, cost structure, and how we decide which one fits each tooth.
A note from Dr. Kim
Many patients tell me they worry less about the result and more about losing healthy tooth structure. I understand that worry.
“Why damage a tooth worth more than you can price?” Blanche started from that question. Our signature answer is Blanche no-prep veneers.
No prep veneers vs regular veneers: the core difference
Regular veneers start by shaving the front of the tooth, usually around half a millimeter, so the porcelain sits flush.
No prep veneers skip most or all of that step. The porcelain is made extremely thin and bonded onto the enamel you already have.
Think of it like a phone screen protector versus replacing the screen. One adds a thin layer on top. The other removes part of the original to make room.
| Point | No prep veneers | Regular veneers |
|---|---|---|
| Enamel removed | None to very little (within enamel) | Usually around 0.5 mm or more |
| Anesthesia | Often not needed | Usually needed |
| Temporary veneers | Rarely needed | Commonly worn between visits |
| Reversibility | Tooth stays largely intact | Tooth stays shaved for life |
| Best suited to | Small, gapped, or inward teeth | Teeth that sit forward or need big shape changes |
| Design difficulty | High (0.1 mm precision) | Moderate (more room to work) |
How no prep veneers vs regular veneers compare on looks

A common fear is that no prep veneers look bulky. That happens when porcelain is added to a tooth that is already forward.
On small teeth, teeth with gaps, or teeth that sit slightly inward, adding thin porcelain actually brings them into line.
Regular veneers give the technician more thickness to build color and translucency. That is why they are sometimes chosen for heavily stained teeth.
With no prep work, the challenge is creating natural depth in a very thin shell. This is where design and lab skill matter most.
Why the lab matters
Blanche runs its own in-house dental lab, Blanche Lab, near Nonhyeon Station.
Our technicians and I check shade and shape side by side, which allows several fine adjustments in the same day.
No prep veneers vs regular veneers: durability and longevity

Porcelain bonds most strongly to enamel. No prep veneers keep the bond entirely on enamel, which supports long-term retention.
Regular veneers can expose dentin when the shaving goes deeper. Bonding to dentin is generally less stable over time.
The bonding system also matters. We use the Ivoclar adhesive system, one of the highest-priced bonding systems available.
It is well tolerated by the body and resists discoloration at the edges, which is where veneers usually show their age.
What about replacement?
Every veneer may need replacement someday. With no prep veneers, the original tooth is still there underneath.
At Blanche, old veneers are removed with a laser without further shaving, and a revision is priced the same as a new treatment.

Which teeth suit no prep veneers vs regular veneers?
Usually a good fit for no prep
Small or narrow teeth, gaps between front teeth, worn edges, and teeth that sit slightly behind the arch.
In these cases the goal is to add, not remove, so shaving is rarely needed.
Cases that may need minimal prep
Teeth that sit forward, or teeth that would look bulky with any added thickness.
Here we may smooth a small amount of enamel while keeping everything within the enamel layer. See our minimal prep veneers guide for details.
When we recommend orthodontics first
If teeth are significantly crowded, straightening them first can avoid shaving altogether.
This is about preserving tooth structure, not a limit of any treatment format.
No prep veneers vs regular veneers: why less shaving is not cheaper

Patients often expect no prep veneers to cost less because less work is done on the tooth.
In reality, the time goes into design, ultra-thin porcelain fabrication, and bonding, not the shaving.
At Blanche, no prep and minimal prep veneers are priced the same. That way, the only question is what is best for each tooth.
| Blanche no-prep veneers (per tooth, VAT excluded) | Price | Warranty |

| PLATINUM: chief dentist, senior ceramist, hand-layered Swiss ceramic | KRW 850,000 | 5 years |
| Signature PLATINUM: Dr. Kim Tae-hyung, dedicated ceramist and hygienist, gum contouring included, VIP room | KRW 1,500,000 | 10 years |
| One-day option | + KRW 200,000 per tooth | Same as tier |
At Blanche, pricing is the same for Korean and international patients. You can review our fee tiers on the pricing page.
One-day veneers are priced higher than the standard schedule, because diagnosis, design, fabrication, and adjustment are compressed into one day with our team fully dedicated to you.
There is no case that cannot be done in one day. Complex smiles simply get more design and adjustment time within that day.
For the full one-day program, including technology, pricing, and booking, see our One-Day Veneers page.

Frequently asked questions
No prep veneers vs regular veneers: which lasts longer?
Both can last many years with good care. No prep veneers bond fully to enamel, which supports stable retention, and the original tooth remains if replacement is needed.
Do no prep veneers look fake?
They look bulky only when placed on teeth that already sit forward. With proper case selection and design, they blend naturally.
Can I switch from regular veneers to no prep later?
Once a tooth has been shaved, that enamel does not grow back. This is why we assess each tooth for no prep first.
Side effects and individual differences
Temporary sensitivity, a foreign-body feeling, or mild gum swelling can occur. Results and longevity vary with each person’s teeth and habits.
I teach the same principle to other dentists: minimal intervention, maximum beauty. I would be glad to help you choose a smile that still works twenty years from now.
