Front Tooth Crown Alternative: Do You Really Need a Crown?

If you are looking for a front tooth crown alternative, a dentist has probably just told you that you need a crown.
Part of you trusts that advice. Another part wonders how much of your tooth will be shaved away, and whether a gentler route exists.
So let’s look at it honestly: why crowns work the way they do, when a crown really is the right choice, and where Blanche (BLANCHE) fits.
A note from Dr. Kim
Hesitating before a crown is completely normal, and I take that hesitation seriously.
No decision depends on one person’s judgment alone.
That answer is Blanche, Front Tooth Reinforcement Therapy.
Why a crown shapes the whole tooth
A crown is a cap that covers the entire visible tooth. To make room for it, the tooth is shaped all the way around.
Front teeth are thin, so that can sound like a lot. And because enamel does not grow back, shaped enamel stays shaped.
That is usually where the worry comes from. It is a fair worry. However, it does not make crowns a bad treatment.
Advice online often comes from one person’s experience, so it may not match your tooth at all. The same goes for any single opinion, including mine.
When a crown is the right choice — honestly

Yes, there are clear cases where a crown fits. In general, they look like this.
| Situation | Why a crown may fit |
|---|---|
| The tooth is broken or damaged over a wide area | The remaining tooth may need covering all around |
| Little tooth is left after root canal treatment | Wrapping the whole tooth may suit it |
| The tooth already has a crown | When it wears out, the crown is usually made again |
Because a crown wraps the whole tooth, it can cover wide damage in one piece. A crown on a front tooth is not a mistake in itself.
We decide this from an exam, not from photos alone. We look at how deep the damage goes, the gums, and whether the tooth has had root canal treatment.
If your tooth needs a crown, I will tell you so and explain why. In that case, a good dentist near home can do it well.
Front tooth crown alternative options, side by side

Each of these treatments has its place. Here are the plain facts next to each other.
| Bonding | Blanche | Crown | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How much tooth is shaped | Mainly the damaged area | None, or under 0.1 mm | All the way around the tooth |
| Material | Composite resin | Thin ceramic | Ceramic and other materials |
| If it gets damaged | Bonded again | Only Blanche is replaced | Made again |
Bonding patches mainly the damaged area. For small damage it may be enough, and it is quick.
A crown shapes the tooth all the way around, but in return it covers the entire tooth.
Blanche adds a thin layer, with no shaving or under 0.1 mm. In short, the right choice depends on your tooth, not on which treatment sounds gentler.
For a broken tooth specifically, our guide to treating a chipped tooth compares these routes in more detail.
A front tooth crown alternative when shaving is the worry
If your real worry is how much tooth gets shaved, Blanche is one option to ask about.
Blanche is not an ordinary veneer. It’s Front Tooth Reinforcement Therapy.
Instead of shaving your tooth down to cover it, Blanche adds a thin layer onto the tooth you already have. It works a little like a screen protector on a phone: if it is ever damaged, only Blanche is replaced.
On chipped, worn or cracked front teeth, that layer covers and guards the weakened surface. On healthy teeth, it designs shape and color.
Blanche is not the name of a material — it’s the name of a standard. We first decide whether your teeth need any shaving at all. Blanche Lab designs and makes every piece from the Blanche Block, and only dentists trained in that standard place it.
If Blanche is damaged later, we remove it with a laser and replace only Blanche. Your tooth is not shaved further, and the revision costs the same as new treatment.
Blanche works on all front teeth and the premolars that show when you smile, up to 20 teeth upper and lower.
The full idea is in our introduction to Front Tooth Reinforcement Therapy.
I was told I need a crown. Is there another option?
Send us just two photos: one of your face straight on, and one smiling. We will tell you whether Blanche looks worth considering or whether a crown may suit your tooth better.
What to check before you decide, and whether to travel

Whether you end up with a crown or a front tooth crown alternative, check these first.
First, how wide and deep the damage is, and whether the tooth has had root canal treatment.
Second, what needs treating first. Cavities, gum inflammation and heavy grinding come before anything else.
Third, whether shaving is needed at all. Finally, compare the costs and timelines of each option.
If a crown suits your tooth, there is no need to fly to Seoul for it. A trip makes more sense if you want several front teeth designed together, if shaving worries you, or if you want it done in one day.
With the one-day option, plan 2–3 days in Seoul, including one follow-up check.
For the full one-day program — technology, pricing, and booking — see our One-Day Veneers page.
Blanche is priced per tooth, VAT excluded: BASIC KRW 650,000, PLATINUM KRW 850,000 and Signature PLATINUM KRW 1,500,000. The one-day option adds KRW 200,000 per tooth.
We are a 30-second walk from Nonhyeon Station Exit 4 in Gangnam, about an hour from Incheon Airport.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a front tooth crown alternative that doesn’t shave the tooth?
Depending on the tooth, yes. Blanche starts by asking whether any shaving is needed and stays under 0.1 mm if it is. Whether it suits you depends on an exam, and a crown may still fit better.
Can a tooth I was told needs a crown have Blanche?
Blanche works on all front teeth, but the right treatment depends on the tooth. If the exam shows a crown fits better, we will explain why.
Do I need anesthesia or temporary teeth for Blanche?
Usually neither. We use anesthesia only if needed, and there are no temporary teeth. No-prep and minimal prep under 0.1 mm cost the same.
Side effects and individual differences
After Blanche, temporary sensitivity, a foreign-body feeling, or mild gum swelling can occur. Results and longevity vary with each person’s teeth and habits.
I still teach other dentists. Crown or Blanche, I start from the tooth in front of me, aiming for a smile that still works twenty years from now.
