Crack in Front Tooth: Is It Going to Break?

A Crack in Your Front Tooth?

A thin crack in front tooth enamel can be hard to stop noticing once you have seen it.

It may show only when light hits it at an angle. Even so, you start to wonder whether the tooth will suddenly break, or whether it will need shaving.

Here is what such lines usually mean, what to check first, and what Blanche (BLANCHE) can and cannot do.

A note from Dr. Kim

I understand how one thin line can take up a lot of your attention.

A smile that still works twenty years from now.

That answer is Blanche, Front Tooth Reinforcement Therapy.

Crack in front tooth: does it mean it will break?

Not every line on a tooth leads to a break.

Fine lines in teeth are often called craze lines. What they mean depends on how deep they go.

The outer layer of a tooth is enamel. Sometimes a fine line forms only on that surface, often after years of biting forces and temperature changes.

Other cracks run deeper. Unfortunately, you cannot judge the depth from how thick the line looks.

Enamel does not grow back, so a line will not seal itself. However, seeing one does not mean the tooth must be shaved or capped right away.

Surface lines vs deeper cracks

In general, they compare like this.

Surface lineDeeper crack
Usual locationThe enamel surfaceBelow the enamel
Possible symptomsOften nonePain when biting, sensitivity
First stepA check, then covering the surface if neededDiagnosis first; root canal treatment may be needed, depending on the tooth

This table shows general patterns. The real depth needs an exam.

No symptoms does not prove a crack in front tooth enamel is shallow. So it is worth having it checked once.

We also look at whether there is one line or several, which way it runs, and whether it reaches the edge.

Pain or sensitivity? Diagnosis comes first

Consultation with the lead dentist

If biting gives a sharp twinge, or cold keeps hurting, get a diagnosis before anything else, wherever you are.

Depending on the tooth, root canal treatment may be needed first. We confirm that with an exam, and that treatment comes before covering the surface.

If the tooth was knocked before the line appeared, have it checked even without symptoms.

Cavities, gum inflammation and heavy grinding are also treated first. In the meantime, avoid biting hard food with that tooth.

If you clench or grind, read how we approach teeth grinding too.

For a surface line with no symptoms, a dentist near home can check it for you. That is a sensible first step in any country.

Crack in front tooth: what Blanche does, and what it doesn’t

Blanche is not an ordinary veneer. It’s Front Tooth Reinforcement Therapy.

Instead of shaving your tooth down to cover it, Blanche adds a thin layer onto the tooth you already have.

Think of a screen protector on a phone. Knocks and wear hit Blanche first, and your own tooth stays underneath. If Blanche is damaged, only Blanche is replaced.

On a front tooth with fine cracks, that thin layer covers the weakened surface and protects what it covers. That is the full extent of what it does; it does not remove the crack itself.

We first decide whether any shaving is needed. If it is, we stay under 0.1 mm, and no-prep and minimal prep cost the same. Usually there is no anesthesia and no temporary teeth.

Blanche Lab designs and makes every piece from the Blanche Block, and only dentists trained in the Blanche standard place it. We bond it with the Ivoclar adhesive system, which is biocompatible and resists edge discoloration.

Blanche works on all front teeth and the premolars that show when you smile, up to 20 teeth upper and lower. If it needs replacing later, we remove it with a laser, with no extra shaving and no separate removal fee.

I can see a line on my front tooth. Can it simply be covered?

Send us just two photos: one of your face straight on, and one smiling. We will tell you whether a diagnosis should come first or whether covering the surface looks reasonable.

How we check a cracked front tooth, and planning a visit

Thin ceramic Blanche

First, we ask about symptoms: pain when biting, sensitivity to cold, and any knock to the tooth.

Next, an exam and a 3D intraoral scan show where the line sits and how far it goes. Any treatment the tooth needs comes first.

If covering suits the tooth, we design the length and color and recommend one follow-up check.

A trip makes sense when you want several front teeth designed together, when shaving worries you, or when you want it done in one day. The one-day option takes 4–5 hours on the day, so plan 2–3 days in Seoul.

For the full one-day program — technology, pricing, and booking — see our One-Day Veneers page.

Blanche is priced per tooth, VAT excluded: BASIC KRW 650,000, PLATINUM KRW 850,000 and Signature PLATINUM KRW 1,500,000. The one-day option adds KRW 200,000 per tooth.

We are a 30-second walk from Nonhyeon Station Exit 4 in Gangnam, about an hour from Incheon Airport.

Frequently asked questions

Will a crack in front tooth enamel break if I leave it?

Not every line leads to a break. However, depth is hard to judge by eye, so have it checked once. If there is pain or sensitivity, diagnosis comes first.

Can a front tooth with fine cracks have Blanche?

Yes. A thin layer of Blanche covers the weakened surface and protects the covered surface. If a deeper crack is suspected, diagnosis and any needed treatment come first.

Do you have to shave a cracked tooth for Blanche?

We first decide whether any shaving is needed. If it is, we stay under 0.1 mm, and no-prep and minimal prep cost the same.

Side effects and individual differences

After Blanche, temporary sensitivity, a foreign-body feeling, or mild gum swelling can occur. Results and longevity vary with each person’s teeth and habits.

I still teach other dentists, and with a cracked tooth I check the depth before anything else. Minimal intervention, maximum beauty.

How your first consultation works

1. We listen to your concerns and the smile you want.

2. Based on your exam, we explain every available option.

3. We give itemized costs and timelines. You are welcome to decide later, at home.

We repeat every explanation at least four times, and no decision depends on one person’s judgment alone.
