Veneers for Peg Laterals: Fixing Small, Pointed Teeth Without Making Them Stand Out

Veneers for Peg Laterals Small Teeth, Natural Fix

If you are looking into veneers for peg laterals, you probably noticed it in photos first. The two teeth beside your front teeth look small, narrow, or pointed, and your smile can look gappy or even a little “vampire-like.”

Many people with peg laterals learn to smile with their lips closed. That is a real cost.

There is a quieter worry, too. If you fix only two teeth, will they look bigger or whiter than everything around them? This post answers that honestly.

A note from Dr. Kim

I know how two small teeth can make you hold back a smile, and with Blanche no-prep veneers we usually add to those teeth rather than take anything away.

“Why damage a tooth worth more than you can price? Blanche started from that question.”

What peg laterals are, and why two small teeth change a whole smile

Your upper lateral incisors are the teeth right next to your two front teeth. In some people, they develop smaller than usual. They may be narrow, short, or shaped like a cone with a pointed tip.

Dentists call these “peg laterals.” They are a difference in how the teeth formed, not something you caused. They can appear on one side or on both.

Because they are small, they often leave spaces on either side. The canines then look sharper by comparison, so the whole smile can look gappy or fang-like, even when every tooth is healthy.

Why veneers for peg laterals are often a no-prep case

Most veneer worries are about shaving. With peg laterals, the tooth is already too small, so we need to add shape, not remove it.

That is why small or gapped teeth suit no-prep. A thin porcelain shell can build the tooth out to a fuller width and a softer edge. The natural tooth underneath stays as it is.

At Blanche, every veneer is fully no-prep or minimal-prep under 0.1 mm. No-prep and minimal-prep cost the same, so the choice is never about price. Usually there is no anesthesia and no temporaries, although we use anesthesia if you need it.

A few things come first. Gum inflammation, cavities, or heavy grinding are treated before any veneer. For more on why size matters, see our guide to veneers for small teeth.

Proportion design: how laterals should relate to centrals and canines

A good result is not about making the laterals as big as possible. It is about proportion. In a natural smile, the laterals are usually a little narrower and shorter than the front teeth, and the canines frame them from the side.

Think of a bookshelf. Two thin books between thick ones leave gaps that pull the eye. However, if you swap them for books that are far too thick, the shelf looks crowded. The aim is the right width for that space.

So first, we measure the space beside each front tooth. Then we design the laterals to fit your face, lip line, and canines. We also check how each canine tip looks beside the new laterals, so the transition looks soft rather than sharp.

“Will my two veneers look bigger or whiter than my other teeth?”

The honest answer is that they should not, if the design starts from your neighboring teeth.

For size, we set the width and length against your own centrals and canines, not against a standard template. For color, we match the shade to your natural teeth. In our PLATINUM tier, the ceramic is hand-layered with advanced shade layering, which helps two teeth blend with their neighbors.

If you plan to whiten your other teeth, tell us first. Porcelain does not change color with whitening, so the order matters.

Veneers for peg laterals: just two teeth, or more?

In-house dental lab work

Many people with peg laterals need only two veneers. If your front teeth and canines already have a shape and color you like, treating the two laterals keeps the plan small.

However, your smile line can change that. When you smile widely, how many teeth show? If your front teeth are worn, chipped, or a different shade, including them may give a more even result.

So your smile line decides, not a template. We explain why we suggest two teeth or more, and our counting guide, how many veneers do I need, walks through the same logic.

“Would two veneers be enough for my peg laterals?”

Send us just two photos: one of your face straight on, and one smiling. We’ll tell you whether no-prep looks possible and how many teeth your smile line is likely to involve.

Other options for peg laterals, and how they compare

Composite bonding adds tooth-colored resin directly to the tooth, usually without shaving. However, resin can stain and wear more easily than porcelain. Our post on no-prep veneers vs composite bonding compares the two.

If the spacing is uneven, moving teeth first can create balanced spaces. We have an orthodontic specialist on staff.

Frequently asked questions

Are veneers for peg laterals usually no-prep?

Often, yes. Small or gapped teeth suit no-prep, because the goal is to add shape, not remove it.

Will two veneers look bigger or whiter than my other teeth?

They should not. We set size against your front teeth and canines, and match the shade to your natural teeth.

Can I treat only one peg lateral?

If only one side is small, one veneer may be enough. We design it to match the opposite lateral.

Side effects and individual differences

Temporary sensitivity, a foreign-body feeling, or mild gum swelling can occur. Results and longevity vary with each person’s teeth and habits.

When I teach other dentists, I use veneers for peg laterals as a lesson in restraint. The goal is two teeth that look as if they were always yours, in a smile that still works twenty years from now.
