Veneers for Gummy Smile: What Porcelain Can Change, and What It Cannot

Veneers for Gummy Smile What They Can Change

If you are reading about veneers for gummy smile concerns, it probably started with a photo. You smiled, and what you noticed first was gum, not teeth. Your teeth looked short, almost hidden.

Many people with a gummy smile learn to keep the upper lip low when they smile, until it becomes a habit.

So here is the worry behind the search. What if you pay for veneers and your teeth just look bigger, while the gum still shows? This post explains what veneers can and cannot change, and why the cause matters first.

A note from Dr. Kim

I know how tiring it is to hold your lip down in every photo, and I would rather tell you honestly what Blanche no-prep veneers can and cannot change before you decide anything.

“Minimal intervention, maximum beauty.”

What a “gummy smile” really means

“Gummy smile” is not one diagnosis. It describes what people see: a lot of gum when you smile. However, the reason behind it can differ from person to person.

Teeth that look short because gum covers them

Sometimes the gum sits lower on the tooth than usual. The tooth itself may be a normal size, but part of it is hidden. As a result, the teeth look short and the gum looks wide.

Lip movement

In some people, the upper lip lifts higher than average when they smile. The teeth and gums may be normal, but more of the gum comes into view.

Jaw position

The position of the upper jaw can also play a part. When the jaw sits lower or further forward, more gum may show even at rest.

Many people have a mix of these. That is why we look at the cause before we talk about any treatment.

What veneers for gummy smile cases can and cannot do

Blanche Dental Clinic, Gangnam Seoul

Veneers change teeth: their shape, color, and edges. However, they do not change your lips or your jaw.

So if your gummy smile comes mostly from lip movement or jaw position, veneers alone will not reduce how much gum shows. They may still improve the teeth themselves, but the gum line stays where it is.

CauseWhat may helpWhat veneers can / can’t do
Gum covering part of the toothGum contouring, often together with veneersCan refine shape and color once the gum line is set; can’t move the gum line by themselves
Upper lip lifting highOptions that work on the lip, discussed at consultationCan improve the teeth you see; can’t change how far the lip lifts
Jaw positionOptions that address the jaw, discussed at consultationCan refine the visible teeth; can’t change jaw position
Short or worn tooth edgesVeneers that restore the edge, where the bite allowsCan add some length at the edge; can’t go beyond what your bite and lips allow

That last row has its own limits. Our post on veneers to lengthen teeth explains what sets them, and veneers smile design shows how a preview fits in.

Gum contouring and veneers for gummy smile cases

When gum covers part of the tooth, gum contouring can reshape the gum line. It reveals more of the tooth that was already there. So the tooth looks longer from the top, not just wider.

Think of a window with the curtain hanging too low. You could paint a bigger window frame. However, the window would look much better if you simply raised the curtain.

“Will veneers make my teeth look longer, or just bigger?”

Many people never ask this out loud. The honest answer depends on the cause.

If gum covers the tooth and we place veneers only on the visible part, there is little room to add height. The veneer can get wider or longer at the edge, but the top stays hidden. That is when teeth risk looking bigger instead of longer.

When the gum line is reshaped first, the veneers can follow a more natural proportion. In short, gum contouring changes where the tooth starts, and veneers refine what you see.

Our Signature PLATINUM tier includes gum contouring and other supporting treatments, and I am personally in charge of those cases. So if your case needs both, they are planned together. If veneers are part of the plan, they are fully no-prep or minimal-prep under 0.1 mm, at the same cost.

“Is my gummy smile from my teeth, my lip, or something else?”

Send us just two photos: one of your face straight on, and one smiling. We’ll tell you which cause looks most likely and whether veneers would help in your case.

Why gum health comes before any veneer

Blanche Dental Clinic, Gangnam Seoul

Gum contouring and veneers both depend on healthy gums. Inflamed gums can swell over more of the tooth than usual, so the design would start from the wrong line. That is why gum inflammation, cavities, or heavy grinding are treated first, as our guide to veneers with gum disease explains.

How we assess a gummy smile at consultation

First, we look at your smile at rest and in motion. We check how much tooth the gum covers, how far your lip lifts, and how your jaw relates to your teeth.

Then we explain every option, including those that do not involve veneers. If the main cause is your lip or jaw, we will tell you so. No decision depends on one person’s judgment alone.

Cost of veneers for gummy smile cases, and planning your visit

Smile design on a tablet

Prices are per tooth, VAT excluded. BASIC is KRW 650,000 (1-year warranty), PLATINUM is KRW 850,000 (5-year), and Signature PLATINUM is KRW 1,500,000 (10-year), including gum contouring and other supporting treatments.

We recommend one follow-up check, so plan 2–3 days in Seoul. We are a 30-second walk from Nonhyeon Station Exit 4, about an hour from Incheon Airport.

Frequently asked questions

Can veneers for gummy smile problems reduce how much gum shows?

Veneers change teeth, not lips or jaw position. If gum covers part of the tooth, gum contouring can make teeth look longer, and veneers then refine shape and color.

Will veneers make my teeth look longer, or just bigger?

It depends on the cause. If gum covers the tooth, veneers alone can make teeth look bigger rather than longer. Reshaping the gum line first helps.

Is gum contouring included in the veneer price?

Our Signature PLATINUM tier includes gum contouring and other supporting treatments. At consultation, we explain whether your case needs it.

Side effects and individual differences

Temporary sensitivity, a foreign-body feeling, or mild gum swelling can occur. Results and longevity vary with each person’s teeth and habits.

When I teach other dentists, I tell them a gummy smile is a question before it is a treatment. Answer it honestly, and you can build a smile that still works twenty years from now.

How your first consultation works

1. We listen to your concerns and the smile you want.

2. Based on your exam, we explain every available option.

3. We give itemized costs and timelines. You are welcome to decide later, at home.

We repeat every explanation at least four times, and no decision depends on one person’s judgment alone.
